Great news for us FredHeads, but keep your eye on the ball; We still have some catching up to do with Giuliani. I still believe his social liberal stuff will not fly with the party here once Republicans (especially Conservative ones) take a solid look at his true voting and actions record of the past 10 years, and compare that to Fred over the same time span. We've been needing to do some cleaning out of the party here and this is a good opportunity to do so.

Fred Thompson debuts in 2nd in North Carolina

First time he has been included in the polls there.

According to the latest Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey, Fred Thompson would place second in the Republican primary race with 25 percent of likely Republican voters. The former Tennessee senator has not yet announced whether he will run for president

t was the first time PPP included Thompson in the monthly primary tracking poll. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani would be first among potential Republican voters with 32 percent, followed by John McCain at 16 percent and Mitt Romney with 13 percent

Zogby Poll: Fred Thompson 3rd in SC

Nice showing - read the ReadMore to see about intensity of support for a surprise.

McCain leads among Republicans with 22% support, while Giuliani trails closely behind at 19%. And while he has not declared his candidacy, actor and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson is in third-place in the first Southern state to vote for President next year with 11% support, just ahead of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who receives 10% support.

[The Rest of the Story]

It is also clear that there is a big pool of undecideds among conservatives, particularly in the western part of the state.

Should Fred Thompson, a conservative from not–so–distant Tennessee who now registers in third place, enter the race for the GOP nomination, those undecided conservatives could give him a lot of room to grow."

Overall, a majority of likely primary voters (69%) said they would be most likely to vote for a candidate who is generally more conservative... Among self-described very conservatives, Thompson (19%), McCain (18%) and Romney (15%) lead.

Thompson enjoys the strongest intensity of support at 95%, with Giuliani at 91%, McCain at 87% and Romney trailing at 78%. Of the top four candidates, 84% of Romney supporters said it is likely they could change their minds about voting for him before the primary.

Courtesy of Zogby Poll, by way of Newsmax

The softness of support for Romney is surprising! But overall its still very fluid - nobody there has their supporters locked down, with all candidates having significant large percentages of "change their mind" supporters.

NY Sun political blog notices FDT

FDT shows up on the radar, and it looks like Giuliani and McCain are losing support.

The story, at least on the Republican side, is that so far this month both Rudy Giuliani and John McCain are dipping in support. Mr. McCain's below 20, and Mr. Giuliani's just above 30.

So, why are both of these candidates falling? Mitt Romney has edged up ever so slightly (from 7 to 8 to 9) over the last three months, but the real story is Fred Thompson, as this graph below the fold should make clear...

[The Rest of the Story]

So far, we've decided not to include Fred Thompson in our indices. He has significant public support, but he's not a declared candidate. And if we are just going to start including popular folks who aren't running, why not include Newt Gingrich on the Republican side, Al Gore on the Democratic side, John Kerry on the Democratic side (OK, just kidding, he's not popular), or, well, just about anybody else. Soon, the chart would just look like a bowl of spaghetti — and no one wants that.

Still, he's becoming a major factor in the race as conservatives unhappy with the Big Three, who've been casting about for a conservative "savior" candidate, jump on the Draft Fred bandwagon

...So, how has the Fred Thompson boomlet affected the other candidates in the race? Well, it's interesting that since February, the last month where Mr. Thompson wasn't a factor, Mr. Giuliani and Mr. McCain have fallen in the neighborhood of 5 points each.

Fred Thompson gains - 2nd in Bloomberg poll

This is good - without spending a dime he is keeping pace and even passing some of the other candidates. After the ReadMore note the national support for Romney is still in single digits. As they note, some of that it due to the general electorate's "never vote for a Mormon" crowd. It still astounds me that people hold being a Mormon against Romney; there are plenty of reasons to oppose him, but thats not a legitimate one in my opinion.

In the Republican field, 29 percent of voters prefer Giuliani while McCain, an Arizona senator who once led the pack, slips to 12 percent, behind Thompson, who is preferred by 15 percent and said last month that he is considering a run for the presidency.

[The Rest of the Story]

Thompson's instant popularity suggests he has filled a void in the Republican field and his potential candidacy takes from all of the Republican candidates, the poll finds. He does especially well with self-described religious Republicans; 21 percent of those voters favor Thompson, compared with 17 percent for Giuliani, 62, and 10 percent for McCain, 70.

Romney, 60, who raised more money than any other Republican in the first quarter, is in single digits, with just 8 percent of Republican voters saying they would support him. This boggles my mind:Eleven percent of all voters say they couldn't vote for a Mormon.

This and some other news got lost in the "deck clearing" FDT was doing yesterday regarding his health.

Fred Thompson leads Values Voters poll

This is a bit of a message to the GOP - your roots don't like who you are pushing on us. Give us Fred!

A recent Vision America online presidential preference poll of over 2,500 Values Voters across the United States indicates significant support for a current non-candidate.

37.6% of the 2,678 respondents supported former Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

[The Rest of the Story]

Vision America President Rick Scarborough said the results reflect widespread uncertainty over the current field of GOP candidates: "It’s clear that our members, like Values Voters everywhere, are looking for an authentic conservative and hoping that Fred Thompson will turn out to be that man."

Scarborough continued: "The Republican establishment is now on notice -- Values Voters are not going to flock to socially liberal candidates, regardless of what label they bear. Conservative rhetoric is less important than a conservative record in office."

Courtesy of Vision America

This is where the party has gone wrong in 05-06. It abandoned its roots, its values - and the values voters. Pretty good point these folks make.

Latest Rasmussen Poll

Rasmussen tends to be more accurate, in my opinion. The difference here is LIKELY VOTERS as opposed to Gallup's "any Republican" sample

PRESIDENT - NATIONAL - GOP PRIMARY

Giuliani 27%

McCain 16%

FThompson 14%

Romney 12%

Gingrich 8%

I believe this is probably more accurate than the Gallup poll below. I wonder if they would poll for "undecided"? I bet that would shave everyone's numbers.

Latest Gallup Poll

Its Gallup so a large grain of salt. Rasmussen tends to be more accurate.

John McCain 16%

Fred Thompson 10%

Newt Gingrich 10%

Mitt Romney 6%

Note that Romney is still mired in the single digits. I also believe this overemphasizes Giuliani due to the sample's nature.

Fred Thompson gets nearly half the voters in a recent poll

Its in Tennessee, so yes there is the "favorite son" aspect. But its also indicative of how people view Fred Thompson once they know him.

Fred Thompson is by far the most popular potential presidential candidate among Tennessee Republican voters, with 45 percent of those surveyed making him their top choice, according to a poll released Monday. That the former GOP senator would get top billing in his home state is not a surprise.

What's surprising is his lead over possible opponents and the magnitude of support for a man who has only hinted at a run, said pollster Matt Towery of InsiderAdvantage.

[The Rest of the Story]

In a poll the group conducted for the Washington-based Southern Political Report newsletter, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the front-runner nationally among Republicans seeking the presidency next year, was listed by 15 percent as their top choice.

Next was former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 11 percent and Arizona Sen. John McCain at 10 percent.

"Fred Thompson is performing well in every poll in the sense he is unannounced," Towery said.

Rassumssen: Giuliani 26% McCain 16% Thompson 14%

Looks like an in depth poll makes Fred Thompson's strength even more impressive - this one adjusts for conservatives, and for likely to vote Republicans. Pretty impessive for a guy who hasn't launched a campaign yet - or even formally agreed to run. What was it Satchel Paige said? Dont look back, something may be gaining on you!

The addition of former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson (R) to the list of candidates shakes up the race for the GOP Presidential nomination. The movie star turned Senator turned TV star weighs in with 14% support among those likely to vote in a GOP primary. Among Very Conservative voters, Giuliani attracts 20% support followed closely by Thompson at 19%, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 18% and McCain at 14%.

[The Rest of the Story]

Overall Gingrich is preferred by 11% while 8% would rather see former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as the GOP nominee. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee reaches 3% and no other candidate attracts support from more than 1% of likely voters. Rasmussen Reports releases updated polling data on the Republican nominating contest every Tuesday. Results for the Democrats are updated on Mondays. In general election match-ups Thompson is tied with New York Senator Hillary Clinton (D) but trailing Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D).

Fred Thompson, man about town?

More news from the Washington Post political gossip columns

A close Thompson confidant, meanwhile, told The Sleuth that Thompson has "the luxury of sitting back and waiting" before jumping in the '08 waters. And while the former senator has been "bombarded" with requests to appear on TV shows to discuss his potential candidacy, the source said, he's going to "wait and see how things develop."

The Rest of the Story

After having lunch Monday at the Mayflower hotel restaurant with Republican Party master strategist Ed Gillespie, the actor and former Tennessee senator met for three hours that day at the same location with former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, also of Tennessee.

The back-to-back meetings underscore just how serious Thompson is about mulling a run for the presidency. And who wouldn't run after managing to place third among GOP presidential candidates without even lifting a finger?

A Frist confidant familiar with the meeting between Thompson and Frist said he thought Thompson was "deadly serious" about learning as much as he could from Frist, who had considered a run for president himself and who, as the former top Republican in the Senate, is a proven fundraiser and has a Rolodex full of donors' names.

Fred Thompson doing well in polls, Blogger coins "The Fredinator"

More discussion of the poll results, this time an online Republican straw poll.

Fred Thompson is quickly making his presence felt online. He's currently crushing the competition in early voting in the GOP Bloggers March '07 online straw poll.

The Rest of the story

At deadline the top five vote getters were:

F. Thompson 38%
Giuliani 16%
Gingrich 14%
Romney 10%
Hunter 7%

Comparing these numbers with last month's results, we see Thompson stealing 13 points from Giuliani (previously at 29%), 8 points from Gingrich (previously at 22%), and 9 points from Romney (previously at 19%). Thompson is also the most "acceptable" option for conservative blog readers with 74% indicating they'd be willing to support him (55% of respondents tagged John McCain as "unacceptable").

Fred Thompson as the new Reagan

Very interesting take of how the Reagan mantle may be claimed by Fred Thompson. This post is quite a bit longer than my usual, but the blog entry I link to is so informative that it deserves amplification and a larger excerpt.

It’s almost official. Fred Thompson is looking more and more like the new Ronald Reagan of the 21st century that the Republican Party has been without since 1988. The groundswell of independent efforts to draft him into the ’08 race is also looking more like a real grassroots movement to elect the first “people’s” President in decades.

The article at the link is fairly detailed - it includes several points of analysis of Reagan compared with Thompson, a lot of polls and analysis of them as well - but it is the conclusion, which I post below, that really rings the clarion bell.

Thompson might indeed be more ideologically similar to Reagan than either Bush. He too is very strong on national sovereignty and security, with firm views regarding Americas roll in the world and the need for strong national defense and foreign policy initiatives. But he is not a believer in any world order under UN control and one must wonder about both Bush Presidents in this regard.

He clearly understands what’s at stake in the current international war against terrorism networks with world-wide reach and he seems to be much more willing than Bush to call a spade and spade when addressing the current crop of anti-American leftists working to undermine American interests in congress right now.

Combined with the fact that Thompson is a great communicator, unlike Bush, these are very valid reasons for the current excitement surrounding the prospects of a Fred Thompson candidacy. It also explains the clear conservative comfort with good men like Duncan Hunter and Newt Gingrich, as well as the utter disdain for faux conservatives like John McCain.

All of this explains the current fear atop the RNC leadership committee and within the ranks of Democrat Presidential hopefuls who are only pretend “people’s” candidates, ordained by their party leadership and the press.

2008 may turn out to be the most interesting Presidential race in modern history and it could mark the first time in a half century that the average American voter got fed up enough to dictate a “people’s” candidate against the will of both national committees and the press, who have become far too accustomed to telling the people how to vote with appalling results.

Finally…the American people seem prepared to wrestle control of their nation from the two national committees who have spent the last several years wrecking their country.

American Spectator: Thompson-a-saurus Rex

What an amusing title! They are referring to Fred Thompson's large impact on the Republican Primary just by saying he's looking at running. And the latest polls back up that view.

Fred Thompson may have only floated the idea of the running for president, but that was enough to shake up the Republican nomination race. In the latest USA Today/Gallup poll, Thompson is already third, with 12 percent of the vote. With Thompson in the race, first place Giuliani drops to 31 percent from 44 percent in the last poll from early March, McCain actually ticks up to 22 percent from 20 percent, Gingrich drops 1 point to 8 percent, and Romney falls into a fifth place tie with Brownback, with just 3 percent of the vote (Romney was at 8 percent in the last poll).

Gallup Poll - Fred Thompson takes a bite out of the leaders!

In his first apperance in a naitonal Gallup poll, Fred Thompson shows up 3rd and takes votes from Rudy while Romney sinks (whats up with that?) and McCain treads water. Take that Pajamas Media (for ignoring us for 3 weeks - We Told You So, PJ Media!)

The latest USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted Friday through Sunday, on the presidential race is out, and it's a humdinger. It's hard to say what the headline even is. Here are a few tries, though:

* Romney's support drops to within the margin of error of not existing (that's 3% support in a poll where the margin of error is 3%).

* Giuliani's support drops 13 percentage points since the last USA Today/Gallup poll, March 2-4 (that's gotta hurt).

* Fred Thompson (not running, by the way) is now the No. 3 in the GOP field, at 12%.

Ultimately, however, I'll go with the headline I've chosen above: "Thompson Takes Bites Out of Giuliani, Romney."

Courtesy of the Ryan Sager of the NY Sun Politics Page

Not too shabby for a guy that has yet to spend a dime on advertising, has no budget, no campaign team, no exploratory committee, and hasn't even declared (yet). Its all grass roots like this place, going by word of mouth.

Fred Thompson beats Hillary Clinton in his first Rasmussen National Poll

Nice to see - but its WAY early. Just mark it up as another reason Fred Thompson should run. There is a lot of hard work and campaigning between now and the first primary/caucuses, not to mention the 2008 general election after the convention. Heck, we still need to convince FDT to declare as a candidate! So there is a lot of time until things start to really matter., and a lot of events too. But I have to say, this is nice to see so soon.

Fred Thompson, a movie star turned U.S. Senator turned TV star, has been publicly considering entering the 2008 Presidential Sweepstakes to fill what some see as a void in the Republican Primary field.

The first Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey involving Thompson shows the former Senator from Tennessee essentially tied with the Democratic front runner, Senator Hillary Clinton. It’s Thompson 44% Clinton 43%.

Courtesy of Rasmussen Reports

HatTip to Bob Waters at Iowans for Fred Thompson

Remember - in the article (you did read it didn't you?) Senator Thompson loses to Barak Obama by a large margin. And also remember that Sen McCain and Mayor Giuliani are still ahead of Fred by double digits in most Republican polls. So cheer a bit to yourself, and keep on spreading the word - we aren't event started yet, so don't act like we're done.

Conservative enough and can win in November?

Bill Hobbs has an interesting analysis of why Fred Thompson is getting so many excited, be sure to read it all.

(Quoting Curl in the Wash times) Some conservatives searching for a new Ronald Reagan are rejecting "Rudy McRomney" and seeking an alternative Republican presidential candidate, opening the door to dark-horse hopefuls, including former Sen. Fred Dalton Thompson and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

...

And yet the fact that none of the Big Three is running away with the race also tells you that the group of conservatives seeking a conservative who can win in November is not yet convinced that any of the three can win the general election. Judging from the polls, Giuliani is doing best with this group, and Romney is doing the worst - though Romney's stock is rising and McCain's is falling.

All of that bodes well for someone like Fred Thompson, whose rating from the American Conservative Union is conservative enough, and who is widely perceived as a candidate who can win - and maybe even win big - in November 2008.
