Fred Thompson: Back To Basics

Interesting take on Fred's outsider/populist themes. This is the first author I've read that seems to understand the way Fred is taking on the Republican establishment as well as the Democrats. I really like this quote: His main complaint with the war on terror is that al-Qaida has a 100-year plan while Washington politicians "have a plan until the next election."

"America's government is bringing America down, and the only thing that can change that is a return to the basics."

Thompson recently gave speeches in Virginia and California during which he scarcely mentioned Bush either. In the world Thompson described, the current Washington players are most notable for being trapped in that undifferentiated swamp we call Washington politics.

That's because the divide that engages Thompson most is not the ideological one between liberals and conservatives or between this or that brand of conservatism. It's the divide between concentrated power and decentralized power. Thompson's core theme is that there is a disconnect between Americans and their rulers. He campaigns against concentrated Republican power almost as much as he does against concentrated Democratic power.

The Rest of the Story...

Thompson's core theme is that there is a disconnect between Americans and their rulers. He campaigns against concentrated Republican power almost as much as he does against concentrated Democratic power. Though a Republican, he's able to launch a reasonably nonpartisan attack on the way government has worked over the last 19 years.

This suspicion of concentrated power in general and Washington in particular is not some election-year conversion for Thompson. It stretches back his whole life. He began his career investigating the Nixon White House. As Stephen Hayes reminded us in The Weekly Standard, as a staffer on the Senate Watergate committee, Thompson asked the question that revealed the existence of the White House tapes.

As a senator, Thompson investigated the Clinton campaign finance scandals (poorly), and established a reputation on one issue above all others: federalism. He was the only senator who voted against the Good Samaritan law because he thought it centralized power in the national government. He was that rarest of creatures -- someone who not only preached federalism to get to Washington, but practiced it after he arrived.

Today on the stump he talks about discovering Barry Goldwater's "Conscience of a Conservative" while in law school. He campaigns against the immigration bill because he doesn't think Washington can be counted on to keep its promises. His main complaint with the war on terror is that al-Qaida has a 100-year plan while Washington politicians "have a plan until the next election."

If Fred runs on these things like the author of the article suggests that he is, then he will win the primary in a landslide.

Contact Republicans in the State Assembly (AoTD 4/18-29)

Bumped daily as Article Of The Day. There are rumors and reports of moves afoot by the party insiders in Denver to grab the state legislature's leadership backing for Giuliani or Romney before the session lets out. We need to put a stop to that. Act Now.

Call the Republican Leadership and let them know: STOP! Wait until all the racers are on the track - and wait until Fred Thompson declares. Especially: No Guiliani!

First -call the leadership (below the fold). Then Check and see if your local representative and senator are republicans - if they are be sure to call them. Try looking at the Colorado State Legislature site. When you call, be sure to offer your name, where you are from (in general the city or county is enough, explain why you are calling and ask them if they'd like your phone number. Remember to thank them for passing your message along to the Senator or Representative. Polite and calm wins the day.

For the names and phone numbers for the Colorado Legislative Republican Leadership, Hit READ MORE. There are also some talking points if you need them and a sample call.

[The Rest of the Story]

Points to make on the call: (USE YOUR OWN WORDS - these are just an example)

* There are reports and rumors that the state party people and power brokers are pushing legislators to back one of two factions: Guiliani or Romney.

* I believe this is a wrong move for Republicans in Colorado.

* Rudy Guiliani presents far too many problems for Republicans in Colorado

* Wrong side of the abortion question for most Republicans, in favor of federal funding for abortions

* Giuliani is wrong on guns, and generally wrong for Colorado.

* Romney is a spin artist, not a genuine conservative - look at his "lifelong hunter" baloney.

* It is a mistake splitting the party

* It is a mistake to endorse any candidate that does not genuinely support ALL of the conservative common sense values like the 2nd Amendment, Pro Life, and Small Government.

* (optionally) Fred Thompson is a better choice as he will appeal to both conservative and independents.

And this is a VERY important one to raise with Republican Party HQ:

How can you square Mayor Guiliani's liberal positions on social issues with those of Bob Schaeffer, who is likely going to be our Senate candidate? We cannot have a party running against itself.

If they have questions about your positions, simply talk to them about your concerns - do not read froma script, be genuine. If there are questions about Fred Thompson that you do not know, point them to Draft Fred Thompson and The Committee to Draft Fred Thompson. Or alternately to this web site.

Its especially important to call these guys - we need as many as we can get - so start NOW! A CALL is more effective than an email.

Whatever you do, be sure to call as many of the party leadership listed below as you can in addition to your local Republican rep and senator (if you are fortunate enough to have one). Be sure to also call all your friends and get them to call these legislators as well.

People to talk to:

At a MINIMUM - call the House Leader Mike May and Senate Leader Andrew McElhany, and the State GOP Headquarters, the first 3 listed below:

House Minority Leader
May, Mike
District 44 Douglas
Cap: 303-866-5523
E-mail: mike.may.house@state.co.us

Denver, CO. 80210
Phone: 303-758-3333
Fax: 303-753-4611

And if you have the time, call these as well.

House Assistant Minority Leader
Balmer, David G

Cap: 303-866-2935
E-mail: david.balmer.house@state.co.us

E-mail: nancyspence@qwest.net

Senate Minority Caucus Leader
May, Ron
SDist 10 El Paso County
Cap: 303-866-2737
E-mail: senatormay@ronmay.org

Here is a sample call:

Hello, My name is Ordinary Coloradan, and I'm calling from Arapahoe County. I'd like to leave a message for Representative Mays regarding a rumor going around. I heard that the legislative and party leadership are pushing legislators to endorsing Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani, depending on faction. I believe this is a wrong move for Republicans in Colorado. Mitt Romney is not credible nor authentic in his stands on the important issues - he is a hip deep in spin and drilling deeper. Rudy Guiliani causes too many problems for Republicans in Colorado. He is on the wrong side of the abortion question for most Republicans, he is in favor of federal funding, he has been repeatedly wrong on guns, and is generally wrong for Colorado. Don't make the mistake of splitting the party by abandoning conservatives. [if they seem receptive: Give Fred Thompson a look first - he is the one Republican capable of building consensus and uniting conservatives and independents. He is the kind of candidate we need to win in Colorado.]
Thanks for letting Representative Mays know what we grass roots Republicans are thinking out here! Would you like my phone number so you can call me if you have any questions? Its 303-555-1212. Again, thanks for your time, and please let Representative Mays know we are concerned, and thanks for holding the line against the Democrat majority. Have a good day - Bye! [if you talked about Fred before then you could add something like this in: I believe Senator Thompson will be the better candidate and he deserves more consideration before anyone decides anything.]

Let them know - NO Guiliani! He's too liberal for Colorado. Endorse Fred Thompson - or at least don't endorse anyone until Fred declares! You do not want to jump too soon - wait until the big guy jumps in!

If you have time, these are good points to make too:

* Did you know that Fred Thompson won the straw poll in Oklahoma last week with more than triple the votes of Guiliani?

* Did you know that Missouri Speaker, Lt Gov and state legislators overwhelmingly have backed him in a petition just 2 weeks ago?

* Did you know that Fred Thompson outpolls the other Republicans nationally except Guiliani?

* Did you know he has done all this prior to starting his own campaign?

If they want to talk about Fred Thompson:

Fred Thompson is polling well nationally, and has political stands on things that will appeal to a broad swath of Colorado voters. And what's more important is that he is a consensus builder and a uniter, not a polarizing figure, and he is rated positively by conservatives and independents alike.

No posts for Today or Tomorrow (AoTD 4/16-17)

Virginia Tech should properly be what the news is today. I'm from Roanoke, graduated high school there, went to college just up the road and had friends who went to Tech, lived in the area until I joined the Army, and still have family out that way. This is a hard, hard day for the Hokies and Blacksburg and SW Virginia. Your prayers for the families are needed far more than any news about politicians. Spend some time today with God, and hug your kids.

From the Courthouse to the Whitehouse (AoTD 4/14-16)

(4/14/07 10:00 AM MDT) This is simply the very best analysis and biography to date on Fred Thompson. Read a bit here -then go get a cup of coffee and sit down and read it all at the Weekly Standard (use the ReadMore to see the link)

A strange thing happened a few weeks back when I went to the Café Promenade at the Mayflower Hotel for an off-the-record interview with an unpaid adviser to the non-campaign of unannounced presidential candidate Fred Thompson.

Fred Thompson showed up.

...by the end of the conversation, two unexpected realities had emerged. If he joins the race for the Republican nomination, and if he campaigns the same way he spoke to me last week, Fred Thompson, a mild-mannered, slow-talking southern gentleman, will run as the politically aggressive conservative that George W. Bush hasn't been for four years. And the actor in the race could well be the most authentic personality in the field.

[The Rest of the Story]

Thompson seems to recognize that he wins the guy-I'd-want-to-get-a-beer-with primary the moment he announces. He comes across as a regular guy--"folksy" will be the political cliché that attaches to his candidacy--and punctuates explanations of his positions with the kind of off-the-cuff homespun witticisms that Dan Rather spent a career trying to come up with. ...

... "Literally, I don't think Fred ever acts," says Tom Ingram, a longtime friend from Tennessee who now serves as chief of staff to Senator Lamar Alexander. "He played himself in Marie, and he's been playing himself ever since." ...

... Thompson never moved to Hollywood, choosing to stay in Tennessee, where he continued to practice law and remained involved in Republican politics. ...

... As we spoke, I was struck by the fact that Thompson didn't seem to be calibrating his answers for a presidential run. On issue after contentious issue, I got the sense from both his manner and the answers he gave me that he was just speaking extemporaneously. Many of his answers would drive a poll-watching political consultant nuts.

Colorado GOP, do we have it?
"Show Me State" Shows Us! (AoTD4/13)

This is a great endorsement in a key swing state - once again Missouri, the "Show Me" state, shows us how its done! Look for more endorsements coming on April 18 when Fred Thompson visits with Congress. OK Colorado Republicans, do you have what it takes to step up and sound off for Fred Thompson, and reclaim the title of "Reagan Republicans" in Colorado? (read more at my ending comments)

MISSOURI HOUSE MEMBERS SUPPORT THOMPSON PRESIDENTIAL BID

56 Republican House Members Sign Bearden’s “Draft Thompson for President” Petition

Today State Representative Carl Bearden (R-St. Charles), Speaker Pro Tem of the Missouri House of Representatives, announced the 56 of his fellow Missouri House Republicans have declared support for Fred Thompson’s potential presidential candidacy by signing the Missouri “Draft Thompson for President” petition. A full 63% of the House Republican Caucus signed on.

“The signatures of these Representatives and other Missourians from across the state represent the broad support and surging momentum in our state for Fred,” Speaker Pro Tem Bearden said. “What we are seeing is the beginning of a grassroots campaign that can carry Fred Thompson to the Republican nomination and all the way to the White House.”

[The Rest of the Story]

Rep. Bearden indicated that Thompson supporters were swayed by the former U.S. Senator’s consistent conservative record, his plainspoken values, and his charisma that resonates with citizens from all walks of life.

“I support the draft petition because Fred Thompson possesses all the qualities that make a great President,” Rep. Walt Bivins (R-St. Louis) said.

Rep. Ed Emery (R-Lamar) said, “Fred Thompson is the kind of conservative Republican that will win big in rural Missouri.”

“Fred Thompson’s campaign would bring the excitement and energy needed for Republicans to keep the White House in 2008,” Rep. David Day (R-Dixon) added.

Speaker Pro Tem Bearden said that in addition to his fellow House members, Missourians from across the state have bombarded him with emails urging and supporting a Thompson run. He also noted that Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder declared his strong support for Thompson this week.

Is there any fight left in the GOP in Colorado? Or are we going to kiss the ring of Focus Groups and Fat Cats, and then let the same rudderless Country Club bunch, who gave things away over the last 8 years, put it over on us rank and file party members again? It is time to step up and bypass the out of touch "elites" who keep bringing us "more of the same" - the same bunch that lost a Senate seat, 2 Republican leaning congressional districts, both sides of the state legislature and the governor's seat. They have already bought into "more of the same" endorsing flip-flopping multi-millionaire "Multiple Choice Mitt" Romney - one of their own. Let them know the grass roots want out of this rut. Fred Thompson, with his authenticity, honesty, integrity, down-home appeal, and ability to communicate conservative ideals to non-conservatives shows that he is the candidate we need for Colorado and the Nation. Fred Thompson will have the coat tails we can ride up and out of the rut in Colorado. Time to step up and sound off, or else be resigned to being in the minority for a long time. I'm game - are any of our legislators gutsy enough?

Inspiring the American Voter (AoTD 4/11-12)

Folks, this is a very good analysis contained in the article - not just about Fred Thompson, but also about the electorate - and the election in general. It deserves your full attention. In case you missed it yesterday, I'm leaving it up as a repeat today.

When fifty percent of the voting population no longer bothers to vote at all and the other fifty percent wish they could find someone who truly deserves their vote for the first time in their lives, what’s your next trick? The answer seems to be, draft Fred Thompson - I’ll get to why in a minute...

But if you step off of the merry-go-round of insane American politics, sit back for a wide angle glimpse at the insanity, take a deep breathe and listen to the white noise of modern day electioneering - you begin to wonder why anyone bothers to vote. Based on the “who” we have to choose from, “what” are we voting for? Fact is, we aren’t voting for anyone, but against the others...

[The Rest of the Story a Very Limited summary]

Collectively, the nation seems sick and tired of all of them and no matter the party affiliation, only a Washington outsider who is not a career politician can capture the imagination of the average American voter and inspire them to self-greatness through good old fashioned self-governance.

Only someone truly different can make a real difference - seems to be the bottom line here.

And that my friends, is what people like about former two term, then back to the real world, plain spoken Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson. I mean aside from the fact the he is a professionally trained orator capable of completing a sentence using only his own thoughts and no old cue cards from any political party campaign guru.

But he is no RNC/GOP golden boy, beholden to party powers and that’s why the RNC is more afraid of him than the DNC, who hopes to pass a bill making it illegal for Law and Order employees to run for political office as soon as possible. The last thing Democrats want to see is a TV debate between prosecutor Fred and Mrs. Bill Clinton, or worse yet, the freshman kid from Illinois with no resume at all.

Fred Thompson : The Pirates Of Tehran (AoTD 4/9)

Fred Thompson, in his own words on Iran and its leadership. (editor note: This refers to the recent kidnapping of the British sailors and marines)

It is critical that we see this incident as part of a long pattern of behavior -- that will continue as long as the current leadership is in power. More importantly, it will escalate unimaginably if Iran achieves nuclear status, and with it the ability to hold millions rather than individuals hostage.

[The Rest of the Story]

I have no idea if Ahmadinejad and those who put him in power really believe the Shi'a Twelver doctrine that they can spur the messiah to return by triggering Armageddon. You have to admit, though, that the possibility that they look forward to entering paradise as martyrs would make them a whole lot scarier as a nuclear power than the USSR ever was.

We need to understand this and use every means at our disposal, starting with serious and painful international sanctions, to prevent Iran's rulers from becoming the nuclear-armed blackmailers they want to be. Unfortunately, we are hearing demands that we abandon the people of the Middle East who have stood up to Islamo-fascism because they believed us when we said we would support them.

If we retreat precipitously, the price for that betrayal will be paid first in blood and freedom by the Iranian people, the Kurds, the Afghanis, the secular Lebanese, the moderates in Pakistan and the Iraqis themselves. And America's word may never be trusted again.

This is only a brief excerpt - as the cliche goes: Read The Whole Thing. This is very cogent analysis and solid presentation of a topic of major importance; one that every credible US Presidential candidate must address.

Why Fred Thompson's Day Has Arrived (AoTD 4/6-4/8)

A good look at where we are - and where we are headed, and why Fred Thompson is needed.

Something needs to decidedly change, or else the currently disastrous political tack of the Democrats may be solidified as a harbinger of America’s future, for however long the nation can endure under such gross misdirection. ... Throughout 2006, Republican compromise and capitulation to the big-spending, morally bankrupt agenda of the Democrats left the public largely disillusioned and demoralized. And that public sentiment was clearly reflected in the upheaval of the midterm elections, which shifted the country decidedly into the dominion of the Democrats.

[The Rest of the Story]

Oblivious to the fact that a watered-down party platform, which largely sidesteps true conservatism, is the primary reason for the GOP’s poor showing last November, party "moderates" (read: unprincipled liberals) strain to the left. Though by doing so they will neither garner Democrat support, nor will they re-ignite any enthusiasm among the conservatives who abandoned them last year.

The current lineup of Republican "frontrunners," led presently by former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani, epitomizes this mindset. But far from being a winning strategy, it is a recipe for disaster.

Enter the former Republican Senator from Tennessee. By the mere suggestion that he might consider running for President, Fred Thompson has completely upset the GOP pragmatists’ apple cart. Without even campaigning, he is presently polling beyond conservative pretender Mitt Romney. And he is coming on strong against McCain and Guiliani. ... Thompson holds several advantages over any of his early-bird competitors. With the exception of his previous support for campaign finance "reform," he has staunchly upheld the conservative/pro-constitution philosophy. Thus, he is not burdened by any pile of liberal baggage from which he must extricate himself. He need not attempt to downplay or recast his past, but instead he can extol it as proof of his long-standing conservatism. So, with mainstream America expectantly awaiting the entrance of a true Reaganite candidate into the presently wanting field of Republican presidential hopefuls, Thompson’s best bet is to simply be himself, and make no apologies for standing as firmly as he has.

Hope has arrived in the 2008 race for the White House.

Fred Thompson is needed to guide the nation off its currently self destructive path. This is a lot longer than my usual AoTD posts, but this is still only scratching the surface of what the writer had on his web page. This is the smallest excerpt I could carve and even so, its still large - yet still inadequate to contain the point well. Please visit the link and read it all - and give the Christopher Adamo his well deserved "hits" on his page.

Too Late for Fred Thompson? (AoTD 3/31)

Not really. The article below details the case for late entries - especially Fred Thompson givenhis impact on the polls. The similar things might apply to Gilmore of VA and maybe Newt (that is, if Gingrich wasn't carrying enough baggage to fill a Fedex Cargo Jet)

Last week I wrote of the amazing draft Fred Thompson movement. And this week, I saw an interesting thing happen. As dubiously as I normally regard polling data, the latest from Rasmussen--its first national telephone survey involving Thompson --may be highly instructive. The results show that without even the brim of his hat in the ring, he already leads Hillary Clinton by a percentage point.

[The Rest of the Story]

There are those who say that it's too late for Fred; that it takes an enormous amount of time to build up name recognition. These people obviously never sit around, as do I, enjoying adult beverages with regular folks who can effortlessly identify everyone, from last night's contestants on American Idol to the latest missing mountaineer by name.

Some also contend that he's way behind in endorsements and fundraising. But scuttlebutt has it that nearly one quarter of House Republicans may be ready to back him when he visits Capitol Hill on April 18th. And money from grassroots conservatives and the rest of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy could pile up quickly should they feel they have one of their own in the fight.

And so, following Vito Corleone's advice to his son regarding enemies, let's listen to what our close friends at the Daily Kos think of Thompson:

[H]e's popular with the Republican base and has proven electoral appeal with swing voters and independents... he's very intelligent, a strong speaker and an excellent debater...Moreover, he would have several strengths against any of our top three candidates. He comes off to most as more likable than Hillary Clinton. Unlike McCain, Giuliani or Romney, he'll certainly out-Southern John Edwards. And he'll score well on the gravitas score against either Edwards or Obama (less so for the latter).

Let's hope he doesn't run, or that if he does, all the top money and operatives have already been snatched up and he gains no more traction than, say, Mike Huckabee.

Rumblings in Texas for Fred Thompson (AoTD 3/30)

Some rumblings in Texas - a key state in terms of money - and votes. This is a pivotal statement in that these are statewide officials with influence in the GOP, and they have not been swung to Giuliani or any of the other declared candidates including local candidate Ron Paul

“RUN FRED RUN” Texas Statewide Elected Officials Urge Fred Thompson to Enter Presidential Race

Today, two prominent Texas statewide elected officials announced their support of the growing national movement to encourage former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN) to seek the Republican nomination for president.

While we agree there are several good candidates currently in the race, we believe Fred Thompson would add an exciting option for Republican primary voters.

In our opinion, unlike the current front runner, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson is right on virtually all issues important to Republican primary voters.

"We’ve won statewide primaries and general elections in Texas. We know what it takes to win in Texas. Fred Thompson has what it takes", stated Commissioner Patterson, who has a record of winning elections in spite of being dramatically outspent by his opponents.

Dobson says "Not a Christian" (Article of the Day 3/29)

This article addresses the rather odd "Fred Thompson isn't a Christian" remarks by Mr Dobson from Focus on the Family. By the way, as a very orthodox, conservative Catholic (says so in the About me of this blog), this issue - and the response below - are very important to me as both a Catholic and a "Ronald Reagan" Republican.

I Guess I'm Not a "Christian" Either

March 28, 2007, 1:04 pm

Posted by Eduardo Peñalver

This discussion from US News, is interesting for any number of reasons, not least because of the suggestion by the spokesman for Focus on the Family that anyone who is not an "evangelical" Christian, no matter how reliably conservative on issues that matter to evangelicals, will have a hard time "connect[ing] with the Republican Party's conservative Christian base." In other words, he is applying a very narrowly defined religious litmus test (presumably on top of a fairly rigid ideological test) for "conservative Christian" support in the Republican presidential primary.

Also interesting, particuarly for those who continue to support a conservative political alliance between Catholics and evangelicals, is how Catholics are clearly excluded by the aforementioned religious litmus test. Now, it's possible that Dobson does not speak for most "conservative Christians" on this, but he is certainly an influential figure in that community and we should probably take him as reflecting (or affecting) the sentiment of a significant portion of those voters.

I also remind readers of Mr Dobson's comments on the "homosexuality" of cartoon character Spongebob SquarePants a couple of years ago, as an indication of the moral calculations that dominate Mr Dobson's wordly concerns.

Perhaps Fred Thompson is like me - he doesn't wear his religion on his sleeve - but he lets his actions (voting record) speak for him, letting his faith shine through in his works (See James Chapter 2 for faith and works being intertwined). I feel that a man's relationship to God is personal and none of anyone else's business in terms of anything beyond generalities. God treats us each as individuals, created in his likelness, and in keeping with this, He commanded us to do unto others...

In this respect, Mr Dobson has assumed the role of Pharisee. In my opinion, perhaps Mr Dobson should reread Matthew Ch 6 Verse 1. Chapter 7 verse 1 is pretty good as well. Perhaps a Mea Culpa is in order, or is that "Papist Claptrap" to you Mr. Dobson?
